How MEC UK banished the blue from Blue Monday #MyPerks
So Blue Monday….we meet again, let’s celebrate….’Waiter, a bottle of your bleakest champagne, please’…
Blue Monday is a name given to a day in January purported to be the most depressing day of the year. You’ve finished all the mince pies, the weather is terrible, Christmas ended up being horribly expensive and most of us are back to the daily grind.
So it wouldn’t come as a surprise if you had started to feel down in the dumps and last week the UK united in it’s anguish on ‘Blue Monday’ – supposedly the most miserable day of the year.
Blue Monday was originally identified in 2005 by academic Cliff Arnall, who thought it fell on the last full week of January. He calculated the date using a variety of factors including weather conditions, debt levels, failed New Year’s resolutions and the number of days that had elapsed since the end of the Christmas holidays.
Lets pause for a second though….How about we shake things up a little? Lets try a pinch of MEC’s new behaviour, ‘Optimistic’, and throw that into the mix. How about we try and motivate our colleagues with our positivity and energy today. After all, that’s what our Thrive culture is about isn’t it?!
Our dedicated culture team ‘My Perks’ had it covered with fun and freebies organised throughout the day to make Blue Monday truly well…. less blue! So, what did we do?
MEC Choir’s Big Sing
Did you know that singing can improve your cardiovascular health, reduce stress, fight off colds and flu and even help you live longer? We held MEC Choir’s Big Sing to flex those vocal chords and release some endorphins! We had a ‘No experience is necessary’ policy as the choir’s brilliant music director, Calum Fraser introduced some singing games, rounds and even a four-part harmony!
IFA ‘Managing debt and paying off the Christmas credit’
We brought in a financial expert who covered financial planning and debt management after the very expensive Christmas season. As we all know its best to clear any debt sooner rather than later and it also touched on the importance of starting a pension and savings plan.
No ones above a bit of pampering – pure indulgence to banish those blues!
Reiki is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that allows everyone to tap into an unlimited supply of ‘life force energy’ to improve health and enhance the quality of life. It has an energising effect that goes on working for days after you have received a treatment.
Free Fat Buddha Yoga
Namaste … we put a call out to all yogis, bunnies, stretchies and super unflexi’s. Fat Buddha Yoga is a modern approach to the ancient art and science of yoga for the next generation. Focusing on deep and dynamic practices and open to all abilities from yoga virgins, rookies to pros.
More pampering! Deliciously indulgent massages to help you banish any blues away. Massages help to relieve stress and significantly boost happiness levels.
