MEC UK raises £50,000 for Anthony Nolan! Go #TeaMEC!
Rich Martin, Business Director at MEC London, talks about MEC’s CSR programme; What we’ve achieved in 2014 and why we’re a little bit proud…
Over the last year, we at MEC have developed a formidable branch to our Corporate Social Responsibility platform. In November 2013 we announced a partnership with Anthony Nolan, the UK’s leading bone marrow register and a hotbed of research for the treatment and cure of blood cancers.
We formed TeaMEC to raise money for this worthy cause and a fleet of determined runners took on the Virgin London Marathon, all 11 crossing the line and taking us past our original target of £26,200 raised. This was enough to get 260 new volunteers on to the register and give many more people the chance at life.
As the year went the fundraising continued; Bake sales, valentines poems, pub quizzes, bogan bingo, a dodgeball event (which lead to some people literally bleeding for the cause) numerous raffles, prize draws , spot prizes, carol singing, a brief flirtation with legendary athlete Daley Thompson and the sale on Ebay of a football signed by the Wolves first team (not our biggest earner that)…
The events carried on, 18 of them in all including half marathons, 10ks and 5ks.
At the end of it all we’d raised £50,000, helped Anthony Nolan have their most successful year and while only half of those needing transplants in 2013 got a matched donor, by the end of 2014 that figure was 60%.
The company will vote for their preferred charity partner at the beginning of 2015, and whoever it is, we will continue to make a difference to people in need.
We’ll keep you updated in the New Year when we announce our new charity partner. If you’d like to get in touch with Rich please do so through the @MECUK Twitter handle.
